Water guns for dog walking

Post by zarquan » Tue Aug 11, 2020 8:05 pm

My dog likes water guns. She is also a black dog, so during summer walks, she gets very hot, so I try to take a water gun with me. My go-to was originally Super Soaker Vaporizer. I usually can go on a full walk if I ration the water or stop to refill once or twice if I don't. I also like having water fights, but my main use case is squirting my dog.

Unfortunately, my Vaporizer is about 12 years old and it is breaking down, so I need a new water gun.

But something horrible must have happened in the water gun world. Every water gun in my local stores are these Nerf ones that have a cap that drains out on my shoulder (which was solved in my Vaporizer 12 years ago with its cap that you push in to fill and never leaked) which also feel very cheap and are either tiny (meaning I would have to keep stopping to refill) or have gimmicks like "Shoots 5 streams of water!" Multi-stream water guns kind of confuse my dog and she doesn't know what to do with it.

The closest thing that looked like it would work was the Nerf Hyrda, but its nozzle is way too big and it runs out very quickly (while also having the downgraded cap).

It's sad because I used to be able to drive to Fred Meyer's and just buy their largest non-gimmick water gun and it would just work.

Does anyone know of a water gun with a
1. large reservoir (as large or larger than my Vaporizer at about a liter)
2. Shoots a single, moderately small stream of water
3. Does not leak
4. Is reasonably durable and reliable?

I am OK with it being pressurized, though if they are, I would want CPS. Basically, CPS is as good as piston, but non-cps is annoying for my purposes.

Alternatively, I did buy a Hydra. Is there a not extremely difficult way to make its nozzle smaller? I am willing to permanently alter it, but I would rather make it a reversible procedure, as it looks like it would be great as is in a water fight when we beat this whole pandemic thing.

Welcome to WWN!

I think the Water Warriors brand would be a better fit for you than Super Soaker. While I haven't handled it personally, the Water Warriors Outlaw might be your best option:

If I were you I'd wait for some other opinions, however, as I haven't used the Outlaw.

Something CPS that can be nozzled down is a tough thing to find new IMHO. The only thing that fits that description is the “adventure force power raider” it’s made by Water Warriors and I’ve fiddled with one myself the shell seemed pretty durable and it holds more than enough water too.

If you ever bother reading these, I worry for your mental sanity. :oo:

Thank you for these ideas. It looks like either of these would work for me. But this leads to a question, where can you buy water guns? These appear to be out of stock everywhere. Neither of these water guns are available in any of my local stores (searching online) or Amazon. I bought the Hydra because it was the only one I could find. This is odd, but I assume this is probably pandemic related. Perhaps this is my whole problem, come to think of it. Not that there aren't good water guns, but they just aren't being made right now, so only the not-as-good water guns remain.

I'd recommend contacting Buzz Bee Toys about where to buy:

https://buzzbeetoys.com/contact-us/

I don't know why they don't do online direct sales to customers.

Maybe you could use a garden pressure sprayer? They're generally large pressurised reservoirs and all the ones I've seen can be adjusted to produce a decent jet. Range and output are modest, comparable to small air pressure Super Soakers, but endurance is long and dropoff isn't too bad. And garden centres sell them all year round.

That is not a bad idea. They have a large reservoir and you don't really want them leaking. I could put it in my backpack. But I am a little afraid of what the neighbors would think. "I promise I'm not poisoning my dog" is not really something I want to have to explain.
