TOMY Bow Splasher - Unusual 1991 water gun

Post by cantab » Tue Jun 30, 2020 3:50 pm

I was looking to see if eBay had any good soakers and I came across something unusual, the "Bow Splasher" by toy company Tomy, with a copyright date of 1991.

Based on the information on the box, it's essentially a spring loaded piston gun. You'd pull back on the piston to draw water from the reservoir and let go to shoot, no trigger and no need to actually push on the shot. (Though pushing might well increase power). The bowstring is decorative with the actual power coming from an internal spring. It's an approach I don't know of any other water guns using.

An unusual and interesting bit of early soaker history.

I think Larami did something similar in the early days called the Super Soaker Bow and Arrow. Not sure which propulsion method it used. EDIT: pressurised reservoir, 1993, so not the same technology, just a passing similarity in shape.

My neighbor owned one of those when I was little. It looked really cool but was rather pathetic haha.
