Hands-On: Super Soaker SS30

Post by isoaker » Fri Aug 19, 2011 11:44 am

Recently acquired a Super Soaker SS30, but not the common orange version, rather the teal-coloured variant.

While the outward appearance of this blaster is in fairly good shape, unfortunately there appears to be issues with its internals. The pump works to push air into the reservoir, but the reservoir fails to hold pressure and the blaster dribbles uncontrollably out of its handle. Because of this, I am unable to do any sort of performance measurements. May try opening it though the backside orange nub appears glued in place, making prying the shell halves apart more difficult.

For now, posted a bunch of pics of the Super Soaker SS 30 variant. Enjoy!

I like the teal version. I have never seen one in real life. I used to have the purple version. I like the orange the least.

I've seen the teal one once before on eBay. The orange one, while not my fav either, is still the original version's colour.

As for colour variants, there are so many it is exceedingly hard to track 'em all.

Wetmonkey and I were discussing this on Sunday. He said we probably only know of around 60% of the color variations of guns that were released. Lots of times guns get rereleased and we don't even know about it.

I'm often torn between practicality and collecting. I brought around 15 guns this weekend. I used 3 personally, and lent out 4 more. An example of this would be the SS 60 I received in the mail on Friday. It looks and feels great, but when it came time to battle I didn't touch it, not even in the soakfest.

Newer acquisition: an original Super Soaker 30.

Took awhile to get here, but now that it is, posted pics of the original Super Soaker 30.

This is seems to be fully functional as well, albeit definitely used and having a little bit o' mildew/mould on the intake tube.

I'm surprised that thing works. Both of my SS 50's have been pinched shut for so long that when the trigger is pulled, the tubes don't re-inflate a bit and certainly don't let any of the air out. I actually have to unscrew the reservoir in order to release the pressure.

Some of these classic guns can last forever if you care for them properly. That's one great thing about keeping things simple. Less stuff to break.

Of course, I'm very very very glad SS moved beyond the original line; but I still think that things shouldn't be made more complex than they need to be.
