Serial Number Database

Post by marauder » Wed Aug 03, 2011 3:06 pm

Last night, DX and I were discussing our CPS 2000s and looking at Wayne Schmidt's CPS 2000 page. At the end of Wayne's page he discusses serial numbers. I'll quote Wayne here:
CPS 2000 squirt guns have serial numbers printed on the left hand side just above and behind the pistol grip. I've talked to a couple of people on different water gun forums and they suggested that these are production codes defining which factory made the gun (the first two digits) and the year (the final digit: 6 and 7 for 1996 and 1997) in which it was made. So far I've collected five serial numbers: 3017, 3126, 3017, 3027, and 3107. The repeated 3017 confirms that these numbers aren't simply sequential serial numbers.
http://www.waynesthisandthat.com/cp2000.htm

If the 6s and 7s truly represent the years of production, then mk1s were still being made in 1997. I took a look at my own CPS 2000 mk1. The serial number is 3017 and the date of production is 1996. The production date, as far as I have seen, always is a year prior to the year of release - which supports the idea that my mk1 was released in 1997, and supports the idea that the final digit represents the year of release. But what do the first 3 #s represent?

I would like to put together a database of, not just CPS 2000 serial numbers, but serial numbers for all Super Soakers. My goal is for us to discern patterns in the numbers and be able to figure out just what they mean and if we can use them for telling different marks apart, or perhaps something new all together.

Please post your Super Soakers, the production year listed on the blaster, and the serial number. I will then edit this post and begin compiling the database. So as not to confuse me, if you respond here please do not respond on SSC, and if you respond on SSC please do not respond here. I will edit this post to reflect replies made on both sites.

Those are not serial numbers (which should be unique), they are production codes.

The copyright date on all CPS2000s should be 1996. However, the 4 digit code notes factory, quarter, and year of production.

AA-B-C
AA: 2-digit factory code
B: quarter (1 = 1st quarter, 2 = second quarter, 3 = third quarter, 4 = fourth quarter)
C: last digit in year of production

As far as I know, CPS2000s were still being made in both 1996 and 1997 until being replaced by the CPS2500 in 1998.

What is up with my CPS 2100 MK3 then? On 2100s, the number is on top of the cap. My only unpainted MK3 cap says "33111", a 5 digit number that is not the item number. My other 2100s have normal numbers, while one of the MK2's has no number on the cap and lacks it anywhere else.

Oh, I can only talk for the CPS2000, not CPS2100s. :goofy:

Hmm I wonder if we can determine marks of other guns from it. My 2000 mk1 is a 3017. I don't have other CPS guns here at the beach house except for a 1500 and I can't find the production code on it. Perhaps cuz its painted.

Here we go-

CPS 2100a2: c2001, item # 40100, production code 1111(no joke)

CPS 2700 mark the silver one: item # 3122-0(seems to indicate marks), production code unknown

Max-D 6000 Soaker Wars Blue: c2001 Larami, c2002 hasbro, production code? C 2822

Iron Man 2 Blaster: c2006 hasbro, c2009 Marvel, production code? C-176C, serial number?(seems to be stamped in, like a serial number) 00041

Bottle Blitz Blue: c2009, production code? C-176C the same as the IM2 weird

Buzz Bee Quik Grips XL: c2003, nothing else visible

Steam Machine 12 inch: no numbers availible

I believe that we should post any numbers we find, especially the item number, as it looks like it might show mark or something.

Item numbers are never supposed to change. I would assume that any gun with -0 in its number always has that, while any gun without a-0 never has it...but things like that are what this topic is for. There doesn't seem to be any logic to the item numbers when comparing CPS models.

I'm camo-painting some of my guns, and making camo covers for others, so I'm going to write down my production codes:

CPS 2000 mk1: 3017
CPS 2500: 3109 ???
CPS 1500 1048

Some numbers I got from DX (feel free to add more/clarify):
CPS 1500: 2018 copyright 1997
XXP 275: 2017 copyright 1995
