Don't quite recall seeing this page before. Anyhow, it's an article on How Water Guns Are Made.
Too bad they don't have images.

I wonder how long today's soakers are made to last. Maybe a few months?

Pump-action water guns are being continuously redesigned to cater to the public's demand for bigger, larger water toys. There are many new designs that promise to meet this request. One new water gun will hold 1 g (3.8 L) of water, have six settings for the nozzle, and three different spray patterns. Another will have 11 nozzle settings and hold 1.3 g (4.8 L). The amount of soakage per second and length of spray are also a large factors in future design.
I'm lead to believe that this article was written back in 1999. It's talking there about the Monster X and Monster XL. Those amounts are accurate if you take into account the PC sizes as well.
An expensive, top-of-the-line water gun may be designed to last for 10 years, while a less expensive product is generally expected to last a year or two.
We don't have any top-of the line water guns anymore. We do have relatively expensive ones, though. Looking at 2005's soakers, they often lasted for only a few months or weeks.
Anyway, interesting article. If the writer had known about today's soakers, however, he might not have been so optimistic.

If anything, the past few years saw a market downturn in general and affecting stock water blaster quality in turn. However, from what I hear, things are beginning to look better and, perhaps in the next few years, there will be increase blaster sizes and power returning.
Then again, I suppose I'm always optimistic about soakers.

Yeah, you do tend to be optimistic. One thing I'm more concerned about (other than the huge decrease in power) is the lack of quality. CPS 2000's have lasted ten years. But with the introduction of Max-D guns came a decrease of durability. Do you have any idea why that happened? Were the quality requirements reduced, or were the testers not as thorough? You would think that even if Hasbro decided to stop making such powerful soakers, they would still make them well-built. We shall see if there are as many reports of broken 2006 Super Soakers as there were of the 2005 ones.
EDIT: And yeah, I still am optimistic about the soakers of the upcoming years. I have an armory that is just fine for my current needs, and of course would buy a future Super Soaker that fit with my standards of a CPS1000 to 1700 level. I have expectations for 2007 and 2008. Anyway, if Super Soaker doesn't improve, Buzz Bee Toys will take away too much of their market share.

I'm optimistic about the future, soaker future that is, and I'm a pretty pessimistic person. Super Soaker seems to be holding the CPS line in a vegetative state (not really alive, but not dead either), and Big Bee is actually listening to us and taking our suggestions to heart. Seems like that's a mighty big improvement over the EES days.

Yeah. Doesn't iSoaker have someone on the inside in Hasbro? I think I read an earlier topic where he had said the contact had made a statement, saying, "CPS is not dead." I'll have to find that topic... And of course, I'm optimistic about Big Bee. He's done a lot more than anyone would expect someone would do for the soaking community.
EDIT: And Adrian, you're nearing a big birthday for you. You're almost to your 1000th post!
