Opening super soaker CPS 1700

I've seen lots of prior posts on this but none of them describe the nozzle cap very well. When they do it's a vague answer by someone who hasn't posted in years. I would PM them but there is no way they would answer. I know how to do everything but the nozzle cap. I'm hoping someone knows from experience. Thanks in advance!

Here are some pictures of things that may help to open:
This shows a little hole that is not there for damage related issues in the space between gun and nozzle cap. This may come in handy for prying.

In the area where light is reflected off the nozzle cap there is a little seam.

Another picture of the seam. This seam wraps all the way around the little nozzle selector piece.

Have you triple checked for screws? Also, have you tried opening the casing? It may be easie than you think. More pictures would be very helpful.

Btw, I like the minor change in your sig. :cps1500:

I love the 1700. Something about the shiny blue made it much more appealing to me than the 1500. When I opened mine up to make Tribulation I had to cut through the plastic cone on the end with a hacksaw. You may be able to put a few flathead screwdriverheads under the orange plastic and pry it off with that though. Cuz I am not sure if it is glued on or not. I would recommend trying the screwdrivers before using a hacksaw.

@marauder_4: The plastic cone you mention is the entire nozzle cap, correct? Also, there is some white substance that appears to have smeared out of the crack between gun and nozzle cap. I am pretty sure the cap is glued. Could you please explain how you hacksawed it?
@atvan: I have triple checked for screws. There are no screws on the nozzle cap unless they are beneath it. Thanks for the idea to open it and give it a pry, I'll think about that. Also what pictures would you think would be helpful because I can take more. I might have to change that signature back unless I can get this open to fix it because it came broken and I didn't want to pay to send it back :P . It's a pretty easy fix once I get it open. All I need is to rubber band and grease the trigger valve. I have seen another post where the exact same thing happened for his 1500 and he fixed it that way.
@all: I'm thinking about trying to blow dry it or freeze it to loosen the glue/plastic. Any more input would be great!

Blowdrying/freezing may weaken the plastic along with the glue, so it might not be the best idea. If it's completely glue, you may need to just remove the nozzle cap completely, a process which will be most likely destructive. At this point, it would be a good idea to ask yourself if you want a potentially functional gun that is lacking a nozzle selector and is super ugly in the front, or a nice-looking gun that doesn't work (and maybe try your hand at reselling on eBay?). Keep in mind that you can always fashion your own nozzle selector. Also keep in mind that once you have the gun open, you may not be able to make a repair, despite how simple a problem the symptoms indicate.

Yeah I know. I think if you remove the nozzle cap but not the selector underneath it it will still operate. If it does die I could always make a frankenstein out of it as you said. Do you guys know of any one else who has opened this gun? Thanks!

There are no screws in the cap. You just have to cut a really shallow line across the nozzle cap all the way across and through down to the blue plastic (don't worry, that's thick) and then make more of those cuts til you can pry it off.

So you mean to cut it all the way across the front of the cap? So that's as if the seam in the gun goes all the way around the nozzle cap? This way you'll be able to open the gun with half of the nozzle cap on each side, right? Tell me if I misinturpritated it. Thanks!

Nope. Cut it the same direction that the nozzle selector is going. Lengthwise of the gun. The actual nozzle selector isat least an inch under all of this, so unless you go crazy with the saw there is no chance of messing up your ability to switch from 5x to 10x. There is little chance that you are going to be able to put the cone back on, especially since it's glued. You are probably going to destroy it in the process, but if you have to open it up you have to open it up.

sorry i'm really having trouble following this. So I cut a whole bunch of circles all the way down to the blue plastic around the outside of the nozzle cap? By outside I mean the area that's glued. once I have done this it should be weak enough to be pried off, right? Sorry this is just a little confuzzling :P .

Cut along the black. Do not cut the blue gray at first. I don't remember if you have to cut that or not, but just cut across the outer layer along the black and do it again the same direction if you have to, until you can open up your 1700.

ok thanks for all your help I think I get it now. So I just make a bunch of those cuts around the nozzle cap? Also would a dremel work better or should I stick with a hacksaw?

A dremel is, in almost every situation, preferable to a hacksaw.

The only time I use a hacksaw is for cutting metal, large sections of pipe, or in areas where a dremel is awkward to hold.

ok. Do you think is it would be possible to dremel away a new seam that goes across the cap connecting the top gun seam to the bottom gun seam? In other words continuing the seam so that it makes a full circle around the gun? This would allow you to open it so that half of the nozzle cap is on either side.

I need to get a Dremel. Christmas present maybe? I'm not sure if you could do that. You might be able to, but it also depends on how much glue was used and where it was placed.

iSoaker should have sent dremels to the community war instead of goblins lol. Anything is better than what I've got for tools. I'm pretty sure that 1500/1700 caps being glued or not is mark-related. I've opened two 1500s and the nozzle cover just popped off in one piece after a bunch of prying. If you are desperate, do the halfway seam thing so the cap is in half and the gun will open. I think that functional and ugly beats mint and broken, but it's totally your call. It is possible to retrofit the gun with a new cover, but obviously that process would take a lot of time and a lot of patience.

Dx but how did you get the cap over the nozzle selector?

DX Its not mint if it's broken. :goofy: MeSoakYou, are you asking how did he put it back on? He probably either left it off or glued it somehow.

No I'm asking how he removed the nozzle cap without damaging it or the nozzle selector tab.
