Canal Battle

Post by SEAL » Sun Jan 31, 2021 5:14 pm

Hey all, it's been a while. I don't know how many people will read this, but I'm posting it anyway just in case.

So me and marauder have been talking about doing a battle in February, most likely on the last weekend (27th-28th). As of now the details have not really been ironed out yet (and I'm not even sure I can make it myself just yet), but currently we have plans to hold it at the scenic Landsford Canal State Park in South Carolina, not far from the Charlotte metro area. The park is situated along a river, which parallels old canal ruins from the 1800s. These ruins are the park's central feature, and could make for some interesting battle scenarios. I will try to get out there ahead of time to scout and get some pictures, but it looks promising so far.

There are parking lots at both ends of the park, about a mile and a half from each other. These are ideal starting points for each team, and because of the long and narrow shape of the park, encounters should be fairly frequent. We talked about doing just straight 1HS, but we could potentially throw in some objectives as well. Either way, there won't be any down time from the beginning of the battle to the end. And of course once it's over, we can chill and do something fun. I could possibly have everyone come back to my place, which isn't too far, but we'll see.

So if anyone wants to come, post below. I know a fair amount of people are interested, most likely enough for at least a 4 on 4. If I come I've got like 10-20 more I can invite. Unfortunately I'm also pretty busy, but I'll do my best to make it since it's been like three years since I fought and I kinda miss the game.

Has it really been 3 years? When was the last battle most of us went to? 2018 or 2019? I moved recently and while unboxing I made a new box full of camo and gear. If anyone needs anything let me know, I have all sorts of sizes. I'll be testing my guns out soon. Attendance looks to be good. Oh, and I think we could make a cool video with all these ruins.

I will definitely be attending! I am super excited to have a battle again, it has been too long. I will be departing from New York a day or two before the 26th. If anyone needs a ride, feel free to contact me via email, it is: kwspang97@gmail.com.

I'm pretty sure the last battle I fought in was the really hot one in spring 2018. So not quite three years, but almost.

So anyway, earlier today I went to the state park to look around and take pictures. The photos seem to be too large to upload to the board directly (not sure why, since they were taken with a phone and I'm pretty sure I've been able to upload regular camera photos to here before, which you'd think would be bigger), and Photobucket is apparently watermarking everything now, so I made a Google drive folder using my school account. Let me know if this link works for you:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

At least this way I was able to throw up all my pictures without cluttering the board. So as you can see, there are some pretty cool ruins. Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot to the rest of the park. There are some clumps of thick stuff to hide in, but most of the woods are fairly open, at least at this time of year. Also, the whole park kind of slopes downward toward the river, which could give us some hill issues. Nothing insane, but I'd be concerned that people would head uphill, which is away from any of the interesting stuff. But that might not be a bad thing since people do walk through the ruins fairly often. It's not crowded at this time of year, but still.

So I'll leave it up to y'all if you want to fight here or not. If we did I think we could do some kind of cool objective game, like capture points or some kind of escort mission. I think the mostly open space could be mitigated by higher numbers, like that one 'everybody dies' 1HK game we played at Hydropocalypse way back when. Not sure how easy it will be to convince guests to come to this though. I'll invite 20+ people, but I'd be happy if even five came through.

I've cleared my schedule for the 27th-28th, so I should almost certainly be able to come hang out, whether we decide to fight here or do something else.

Looks like a nice location. I found a map, though I'm not quite sure where each photo is: https://southcarolinaparks.com/landsfor ... -brochures

I'll be moving to Virginia sometime this year so maybe I could join you all in the future, but not any time soon.

(Yes, it seems that the photos probably were too large. It might be possible to change the forum software to resize them but I don't have time to look into that right now.)

Thanks for checking it out SEAL. It looks like we could have fun and film something cool, but definitely not one of the better locations we have had. If you are willing to drive further, consider Goodale State Park. I have been there several times and it's more typical waterwar terrain. The trails have thick foliage around them and there are also a few buildings. I can already vouch for it, but it is further from Charlotte.

Ben, it would be good to have you close by! Did you get a position with a University?

This sounds fun and I miss water wars, but it's not the right time for me. The pandemic is still raging up here and after several exposure scares with negative tests, I am strictly limiting exposure to a handful of careful friends of which I know their daily habits/where they go/who they also interact with. A gathering with 20+ people of basically unknown travel/exposure history in an area of the country that doesn't have a reputation for being careful just doesn't sound like a good idea yet. Several people I knew have died and one of my friends who was in good health came down with one of the most horrifying covid cases I know of in the entire world, involving repeated major organ failures and 7 months in hospital ICUs. His family posted weekly updates and the details are straight-up horrific. I have another friend who got a mild case initially, but managed to get re-infected with a different strain and that put him in an ICU for 3 months. So, I am definitely waiting for more widespread vaccine rollout before resuming events.

I'm sorry to hear about your friends. Several of my coworkers have been infected. Most didn't really display any symptoms, but the guy who was the most fit actually had it the worst which was surprising. He was infected from his brother as right now we are only working at about 25 out of 700 in person and everyone else remotely.

I received the Moderna vaccine, so I'm actually good to go. I was surprised at the number of people who declined to get vaccinated but I jumped on it as soon as it was offered. There are perks to being an HR Officer in the Army. If anyone missed it, I went full time Army. I don't think anyone in the community is at risk, so it may be longer for y'all to get it, but I really think most people should be able to be vaccinated by late Summer.

On feb 2nd a cat crossed the road in front of my bike while I was bombing down a hill at 40mph. Somehow I missed the cat but I ended up faceplanting, in total I broke my jaw in 4 places dislocated the left side and it took 20 stitches to fix my chin. At the moment I’m on a liquid diet and at the moment I’m not likely to be going out of town for a while.
If you ever bother reading these, I worry for your mental sanity. :oo:

^OUCH. Hope you get better soon.

Perhaps it's better to wait a couple months before doing this. That way Storm should be all healed up and the foliage will come in. I looked at pictures of the canal park during the summer, and it is a vast improvement. Only thing is I'm sure it'd be more crowded.

I looked up Goodale state park and I really like it. Most of the pictures are from the summer though, so I'm not sure what it looks like around now. But it looks like a great place for a naval war. Imagine fighting on boats among all those big swamp trees, and using them as cover to land on the beach. Super awesome. Only issue is that it's kinda far from Charlotte, meaning that I probably wouldn't be able to bring as many guests. Though it's unlikely that many would be interested at this time of the year anyway, which another reason why it might be better to wait until it gets a little warmer.

But if Marauder still wants to come visit, we could do something else as well. A couple friends are organizing a hiking trip that weekend, which automatically gives us something fun to do. Or we could scout somewhere.

^It's at Elk Knob which is in the mountains. Obviously that would be pretty far for you, but you'd be welcome to carpool. We do leave quite early though.

Elk knob is a really cool place. It's also the opposite direction. Regardless, I won't be able to make it anywhere. My is completely broken down and will be for quite some time. I would still like to get together with everyone, but it will have to be later.

You mean your car? That sucks, what's wrong with it? Looks like this weekend is just poor timing all around. But that's okay, we can figure something out for later. The parks will all be better then anyway. I was thinking about hosting a pool party this summer, which you'd be invited to. Might be fun to combine that with a water war.

Hopefully we can get a full reunion going after sufficient vaccination and what not. (Will take me a long time due to the way they sorted it.) I have a ton of gear to unload as I never managed to downsize some time ago. Turns out light primaries and sidearms don't sell lol.

If we do anything on the less conventional side of things, hopefully I'll have the gear and training for it then, lol.
