7-year-old Suspended for Drawing a Water Gun

While they don't show the picture, I think even were it a drawing of a real gun, this sort of policy is pure stupidity. Heck, I recall drawing warships, tanks, and full combat battles with blood, fire, smoke, and explosions during kindergarten with no qualms from anyone. These present-day sort of surreal suspensions for a drawing from a kid make me sad for our society...

I remember getting in trouble for similar drawings during Art class in elementary school. They told me that it was "unacceptable" and that I shouldn't do it again and what not. This case really went overboard on the punishment. A suspension for a drawing? The kid didn't really even do anything.

Completely ridiculous.

On a sidenote, I think that suspending a kindergartener is more of a reward than a punishment, it's not like you have to make up much...

But it's the principle that I'm bothered by, and that is ridiculous. It makes me want to vomit, when I think that adults actually sat down and were able to take themselves seriously while they decided this punishment.

Just another example of how zero tolerance means zero intelligence. I can't believe people who promote zero tolerance are in charge. We should have a zero tolerance rule about zero tolerance rules.

Who's the real victim here? The kid. Come on, he's in the second grade. He doesn't mean to harm anyone. A drawing is very different from a gun. And he wasn't drawing anything remotely dangerous. A water pistol? That's going way too far.

I hope whoever decided this will be asked to step down soon.

Just another example of why Jersey's a f*ed up state. I'm sure that stuff like this happens elsewhere, but still. Every aspect of behavior is so strictly regulated, or at least they try. In Ridgewood, you can't set off private fireworks, you can't use public parks without a permit, you can't own a paintball gun, you can't repair a fence without a town hearing, you can't wear flip flops in the middle schools. Not being able to draw a water gun is ridiculous. Let's see, in second grade I was able to fight with sticks, tackle people in boys vs girls playground warfare, oh and throw snowballs.

I know people are paranoid about school shootings, but this is freakin elementary school. Shootings have happened at that age, yes, but that's just the thing. No matter what you do, there will always be school shootings. There are over 300 million people in this country. Zero tolerance for anything remotely violent is not the answer. It goes the same way with violent video games. Kids like to vent by shooting up the LCPD from a Rhino, but they're not dumb, they know there's a tight line in real life.

Let's ban everything remotely dangerous while we're at it, starting with dihydrogen monoxide. Breathing in too much oxygen can kill you too, so let's ban oxygen as well. Light is deadly so there that goes. Oh and there's feelings. Hatred and sorrow can kill, so forget them. :goofy:

I think that their not showing of the picture has something to do with how ridiculous it might've looked. Being placed in an article written by writers that like to look professional, I suppose a child's drawing that would make the story look ridiculous in itself would be out of place.

Very ridiculous. I agree with everyone that this is absurd and totally out of order. I mean come on. It's more dangerous to be in a car than to even have a real gun, let alone draw a water gun.

Wow. I haven't posted here in a while.
