Re-Create Dusty's water gun

Post by JAZE » Tue Mar 12, 2013 2:31 am

Hey guys,

I was browsing the ssc forums, and I saw this really cool water pistol made by Dusty. Unfortunately, there are no plans, so if anyone could help me get some plans that would be great.

Thanks!

It's really simple. He filled an air compressor tank with water, and made essentially a steel PR blaster. Fun until it runs out of pressure, then you're SOL. Sorry to rain on your parade but its really not practical.

Actually, Dusty used water bladder tanks, so this is just a big CPS gun. He said that he got them at a local well water and irrigation supply store. That rest of the parts are pretty standard stuff that you could pick up at a home improvement store in the plumbing section.

Yeah, it would be a good project. I don't think it isn't practical, I think it is very practical, it is QFD powered. The CAP design and Roland tower design is when you run out of pressure, then your SOL.

Has anyone got a better design? I'm only 13 and advanced fluid mechanics is a bit advanced!

This is close, but much smaller :goofy:

It's technically not CPS. It has a bladder, but it's purpose is to separate air and water. It's pre-pressurised and (as the air volume is greater than the water volume esp. in larger ones) the pressure drop-off less significant.

Dusty's is basically two of these tanks, strapped to a backpack frame, with a large pressure hose running to a hand grip with a ball valve.

Good times. I am always on the lookout for something like this...

Where is this fluid dynamics you speak of?

The design is not all that complicated. The original thread also gives a good deal of information.

Well, not that much soakage.

Is there anyone that knows where to get the tanks in victoria? I have looked around online but can only find big tanks or online ones but I don't know if they are the correct kind and they are too expensive to make a guess buy so if anyone else ha tried making one maybe provide a link to buy?

I don't know of anyone who wanted to duplicate Dusty's gun and went far enough to actually buy parts, so I'm afraid we as a community don't know.
If you ever bother reading these, I worry for your mental sanity. :oo:

What you guys are looking for are called water heater expansion tanks. If you are only going to be pressurizing off city water the links below the first link will suffice. If you plan on going to higher pressures than standard Super Soaker 60 psi then you would want to look into something like this:

http://www.watts.com/pages/_products_de ... sp?pid=852

In the US:

http://www.homedepot.com/b/Plumbing-Wat ... olZ1z0u2h8

In Victoria, Canada:

http://www.homehardware.ca/en/rec/index ... nsion+tank

I would call around in Victoria for the potable variety of Hot water expansion tanks for a water heater. All I was able to pull up was the non potable one. I doubt there is a tremendous difference in construction between the two varieties. I was surprised the Canadian websites have so little product actually listed on their websites. Even if you compare the US Home Depot site versus the Canadian one you see a huge disparity between the two countries' websites. If you don't find what you are looking for in Victoria you could always call Mclendons, Lowes or Home Depot in Seattle and have one shipped out to you.
