Hands-On: Defender - Max Infusion Defender

Post by isoaker » Fri Jan 27, 2006 9:16 pm

Upon opening the soaker, I was surprised by the sheer shortness of the grip area. However, upon actually holding the soaker, the small grip area actually works quite well due to its shape. Even larger hands (and I don't consider my hands that small :goofy:) would likely fit comfortably. Nicely done...

Going to take some pics before testing the stream out...

More to come later.

For those wondering about the new Max-I caps, they are larger than even the 2005 caps and don't fit last years' soakers let alone earlier models. As well, at least for the Defender that I've got, the threading it backwards, meaning that one needs to twist clockwise to open and counter-clockwise to tighten.

The stream from the Defender feels pretty good... reminds me of a thicker version of an XP70 stream. I need to measure stats, but consider myself too tired at the moment to do stats properly. I'll measure things tomorrow.

That's it! That must mean it's 1-2x not the 4x I had hoped for. I guess I won't be getting the defender, but I will wait for the full stat's before final judgement. Still thinking about how to mod that cap.

The Defender isn't a large blaster; only roughly the size of the XP70 (perhaps a little chunkier, but similar overall). A 4x stream on a blaster this small would be overkill. Feels like 2x, but I need to measure it to be more sure...

Is there a seperate air chamber on the Defender or is it just pressurized resivoir? Output measurements would be much appreciated.

PS: Pictures, pictures, pictures, pictures...

I plan on doing output measurements tonight. There is most definitely a separate PC on the Defender. All Max-I soakers MUST have either a separate PC or be piston-based to work with the backpack. Pictures are being edited currently. I'll try to have the gallery images up later tonight as well.

^ Is it a cps chamber or just a separate pc air pressure gun?

Output Measured: 35mL/sec (~1.2oz./sec) --> 1.2x nozzle
Shot Time: ~4 sec

Holds ~950mL in reservoir and 150mL in the firing chamber.

More images can now be found in the Product Gallery page for 2006

150mL for the pc is kinda sad...one of my homemades holds well over 1500mL in the pcs.

How large is the gun? It seems really small like a MD 5K or SC 600 size. Also, did you take range measurements?

No range measurements until spring. The Defender is basically the same size, though with slightly better stats, as the XP70. While a far cry from any cannon, for a starter, general-purpose soaker, it actually feels pretty good.

35mls/s? I have to say, even for a soaker of this size, that is pathetic. Looks like I'm going for more Buzz Bee Toys blasters this year.

I like the look of the defender, It seems it would be really comfortable in your hands. It kind of look's like Sam Fisher's rifle from the splinter cell series. Speaking of which Double Agent got delayed to september  .

I myself compare the gun to guns from 1989-1994. I compare the guns now to the guns of the past. Those were the years of air pressure. And most guns from that time period would kill this one. That aside, Hasbro hasn't been doing well on large PC's. The APD only had a 300ml pc, meaning allmost 30 full shots! The CPS 3200 holds 900 ml in a PC and has about 9 shots (my brother has one). Hasbro needs to have bigger PC's before they can make bigger nozzles.

Um, that's a given. Hasbro has been aiming at their most profitable market which, well, is with soakers of the size of the XP70 (or, for this year, the Defender). It may be no serious 'soaker', but it will do well for most casual water fights.

I really want to know the range... also, does it come with a strap?
