What games do YOU prefer?

Post by isoaker » Tue Nov 04, 2008 1:35 pm

Soakfests are great fun and likely make up the majority of water warfare games I've found myself participating in. As soakfests are meant to be purely for fun, rarely are any objective form of scoring or ranking used to determine who won (though often one can tell who got the most soaked :goofy: ). However, when it comes to organized water warfare games, there are a number of potential game types out there from elimination or one-hit-scoring games to slightly more complex games such as capture-the-flag or some sort of base-defense game.

When it comes potentially participating in an organized water warfare game, what type of game do you think would interest you most in trying out with a bunch of friends or other interested water warriors? Would you prefer individual scoring/elimination games or do you prefer team-based games?

If you prefer a game type that is less obvious, please describe the sort of game you'd like to see played. Consider this as fishing for ideas for laying out better organized water warfare rules. I'd like to end up choosing a few organized water warfare game types on which to build and create more detailed instructions on.

Soak on!

As you know, I play mostly 1HK but I really want to experiment more with objective-based games, which often require more (or at least, different) tactics and, if they work, would be more fun. Soakfest is long gone, not really the sort of game for our typical wars, but still good for casual games, or "games" that happen spontaneously. =p

@C-A_99: Any specific sort of objective-based games you think others would be interested in?

Anyone else have thoughts on game types they'd want to have a good, practical ruleset available for?

The objective based games I need to experiment more with include search and destroy/assault and some CTF variations, particuarly standard 2-flag and assault 1-flag games, none of which I've tried. (I've run about 2-3 standard CTF soakfest games through... our water warfare history so to speak...) I'd also like to work with some sort of conquest/domination sort of game, but that may only work in video games unless you get good players who can follow down every rule well.

The objectives to most of these basic games can be tweaked to just about anything. For example, you can tweak the CTF game from a standard to a game where one team has, say, 4 flags, and the other has to capture them. (i.e. Counter-Strike style, where the CT's have to rescue the hostages, likewise with search and destroy, where a bomb is planted) Search and Destroy can also be translated to a moving objective, i.e. a VIP. This is why I adopted the flexibile rule system, which allows just about any game variation you can think of to be created from just a few simple factors.

Other than objective based games, I'd like to work with a respawn/soak points system (i.e. players get points for getting kills) but we've only resorted to elimination for simplicity... Stepping this up is going to require some planning and people who are willing to cooperate instead of sticking to the old tried and true games.

Hello all, it's been while. My preferences have shifted due to 2 years of not fighting. Ridgewood's standard formal OHS would not work as well on a college campus [while I wouldn't even bother with soakfests of any kind] so I've become more interested in objective/scenario-based game types. Some games that have been reformulated to appeal to a college crowd:

Dorm Wars - can be several teams. Each team starts with a set of residence halls and tries to take them all. Control is established when a live player steps within a zone at the front door and holds for a set amount of time. No entering of dorms necessary or allowed. Can be elimination or respawn, teams may only respawn at dorms that they control. This can also be adapted for academic buildings instead of dorms. In that case, points would be awarded for buildings according to importance, like the campus center being 4 points vs the laboratories being 2 points. This allows for a winner to emerge from a stalemate.

Siege - consists of a defending team and attacking team. The defenders must hold a designated area for a certain amount of time. At Conn, it would be an area like Castle Court - small, open, and with chokepoints. OHK for defenders, attackers may respawn.

Special Delivery - A defending team must escort a pizza from the cafe to the president of the college. The attacking team attempts to kill the defenders en route and steal the pizza. If the defenders reach the objective, they win the mission. If the attackers win the mission, they also win the pizza. OHK for defenders, attackers may respawn.

Civil War: Two teams face off across a completely open field/green. The objective is to reach the other side without being hit. The main condition is that players may not step backward. If members of both teams survive the first battle, they face off again until only one side makes it through. OHK.

I have also been experimenting in the realm of scenario/objective based games. However, for me, nothing quite beats a surprise summer soakfest for cooling down on a hot day.

If that pizza got soaked... that would suck lol. Very interesting game ideas, though I could imagine how fun any game would be on a campus due to the environmental variety.

We played big team soakfests whenever we got the chance, though on occasion we fought free-for-alls. I really like team warfare with friends.

DX: Your scenarios strike me as the future of serious water warfare - objective based, practiced by older kids. Good for you if you've helped instill an affinity for the sport in your classmates.

The huge FFA soakfest. No questions asked.
Water Warrior for three summers and counting.
Was captain of a team, but team disbanded due to lack of interest.
Still love soakers.

I like the objective-based game ideas. Perhaps those should be explored more.

As for those who stated their preference for FFA games, you're sorta missing the point of this thread. FFAs are great, of course, but don't fall under the organized-game-category which is what this thread is about (see first post).
