Maps for War Stories

Post by marauder » Fri Aug 16, 2013 12:50 pm

Hey everyone, I'm going to start making battle maps for some old war stories. I was wondering if this would help everyone be able to understand the story better, and if it would make you more likely to read war stories. I love reading war stories, but I often find myself struggling to figure out where everything is happening, especially with events that featured a lot of movement (eg Waterbridge vs Ridgewood). I thought that this would be fun and it would help us discuss the tactics of past events - and what YOU would do in retrospect. Actually, that gives me another idea. A new form of tactical scenarios. Old battles revisited. Could you have done it better? What does everyone think?

It would help greatly, reading war reports you can see that everyone (yes even you m4) makes the assumption that the reader will know the area just about as well as the writer does.
If you ever bother reading these, I worry for your mental sanity. :oo:

It's a good map, I like how you drew the movements and placed they in the story.

But I can't get to it from your site because links are stacked

I'm not sure what you mean, but I do know that on the computers at the library the site looks different and I have to make the DIVs longer in order for all the content to fit into them. So based off that and what you said, I'm guessing the links are overlapping on your computer, which really annoys me. The problem is I'm not sure how to fix this so that it looks good on multiple computers while still using wordpress.

I think I've done this in the past (made battlefield maps), but it usually takes way too much time to do. Obviously you could get a map of the battlefield off Google like marauder did (which I think looks great, by the way) to save time, but that won't work if the battlefield is in the woods and nothing but "broccoli" can be seen from above.

I've had that problem on Hydrowar too. Some of the links overlap and end up looking like a jumbled mess of text. Maybe iSoaker or someone who's good with Wordpress can help.

*edit*

Currently going through a lot of work, with Duxburian's help to fix the war stories page and other pages that have this problem. You should be able to see all the war story links on the page now. http://hydrowar.wordpress.com/war-stories/ It just needs to be made to look a lot more professional. Currently working on that, but at least you can get to the stories.
