In answer to your question, (I'm fairly certain) this blaster was first made in 1987. Originally an almost identical replica of the Berreta M9, going as far to even put the Berreta logo on the grip. Sadly, for the realistically-styled water gun-loving crowd, these toys were not being used for play. Miscreants came to realize that it is much cheaper to buy a real-looking toy gun to intimidate and rob other people and even banks as opposed to needing to try and acquire an actual firearm. Moreover, some law enforcement members, thinking their safety may be in danger, mistakenly fired upon individuals carrying only toy guns. As a result, new laws and manufacturing regulations began appearring, requiring toy guns to either have a blaze-orange end-cap and/or be coloured in a bold, bright colour scheme. If we look at any of Larami's blasters made after 1988 we can see the blaze orange tip. Around mid 1987, the battery door, trigger and tip were changed to a red color, and the Berreta logo was removed from the grip. Then as evident on the 3rd style model pictured, the grip, magazine base, trigger, and battery door were all switched to a bright color, and a blaze orange tip was added. This shell with a new set of internals and some modifications was also used as the Larami Z-matic cap pistol. No worries about the late reply. I appreciate you taking the time to explain the context of this. I imagined that at one point water guns had to start looking less like real guns but I never learned much about this until your post. I also never thought of Laramie having water guns before the Super Soaker line, but I've now looked over the Wikipedia article for Larami and see that they had many before the Super Soaker line.

Larami Corp had sold water guns / water blasters even in the 1970s. (see: http://www.isoaker.com/Info/history_presupersoaker.php) Of course, the Super Soaker brand and their performance back-in-the-day really put them into water blaster history.

By target I'm guessing you're referring to the water laser target game pictured below. In answer to your question I don't currently own those blasters.
