[Bethesda, MD] Soakemore 2015 - June 19-22

Post by scottthewaterwarrior » Wed May 20, 2015 7:50 pm

Stuff has been pretty crazy with me lately, but I really need to get on this if it is going to happen at all.

At this rate we would be looking at mid to late June for the event, and it would be best to figure out dates as soon as possible so I can reserve the island. It will probably be pretty similar to last year, Sycamore Island one day (obviously), and Carderock the other with night wars at Radnor School (I think it has since been renamed, but it is the one buy the golf coarse) I have been scouting new locations to use instead of Carderock, but so all of them have been ether too small or had nothing but huge hills.

Where:
Bethesda, MD, near Washington DC

When:
The weekend of June 20-21, with people arriving on the 19th and leaving on the 22.

Attendance List:
---WW.net:
*Scottthewaterwarrior
*Drenchenator
*HBWW (CA99)
*Duxburian (watch out for DX!)
*SEAL
*SSC Ben (for some of it)
*Chivesthechimp
---Scott's local friends:
*Christian

Locations:
*Sycamore Island (for early arrivals/late departures Friday and Monday only)
*Carderock (south of where we normally fight)
*Westmoreland Park (I feel it has untapped potential)
*Radnor School (night wars)
*Westland Middle School (night wars if Radnor gets boring)
*Possably Rock Creak Park/Blockhouse Point if I can explore them more
All locations have no easy place to fill, so we must bring enough water with us. Westmoreland park does have a stream, but it is only easy to access from the lower area. Carderock has water spigots, but we'd have to drive to another area of the park. All other possible locations have NO WHERE to refill.

Schedule:
---Friday:
People arrive anytime (earlier than Friday is fine if you let me know ahead of time)
*Battle's at Scycamore Island (if enough people get here early enough)
9:00pm --- Night Wars at Radnor School
Playlist:
*Two flag CTF
*OHS
*Escort VIP though portables
*Free for all soakfest

---Saterday:
11:00am --- Go to Westmoreland Park
Playlist:
*Opening OHS game in lower area
*Chaos round
*Chaos round (free for all)
1:00pm Lunch
*One flag CTF on slaughter hill (upper area)
*OHS in upper area
*Two flag CTF in lower area
*OHK in lower area
*Other rounds time permitted
6:00PM --- Go to my house for Dinner and prepare for night wars
8:00pm --- Night wars at Rador School
Playlist:
*OHS
*Destroy the objective
*Two Flag CTF
---Sunday:
11:00am --- Go to Carderock
*three team OHK with light blasters
*Escort VIP
*One flag CTF
1:00pm Lunch
*OHS
*Other rounds until we get too hot in which case soakfest!

\/\/Old Stuff no longer relevant\/\/
Again, my bad for being inactive for so long, but school is over and beyond looking for a job, I should have plenty of time to be active now.

Please respond with the dates you are available as soon as possible its my fault, as I should have made this thread months ago, but I need to know dates, but I need to reserve the island ahead of time.

Due to how hot it gets in DC, earlier would be better, but since it must be planned a month in advance (although they are a little flexible), therefor the weekend of June 13 and 14 would probably be the earliest we could have it.

There it is! I knew you could do it! :goofy:

I'll post on the calendar shortly. I'm available all summer except first weekend of August.

Edit: Last week of July (25, 26) would perhaps give me an opportunity to piggyback off the event and stay a week before taking a much easier drive to Apoc.

Also, please welcome your new official Soakemore night wars host: Duxburian! The former leader of the legendary RM himself should be here shortly.

Filled out the Doodle poll. I could probably do any particular day or two on the weekend. Might not be able to stay for too long, but we'll see. Thanks for organizing this.

I am not 100% sure about all these weekends, other than I definitely can't make June 13th-14th. The end of July is not good either, since there's Apoc and Pandemonium right after that. I want to say that June 27-28th is occupied, but I can't remember with what.

NIGHT WARS! PORTABLES! This may be the first war when if you ask me if I want to fight some night rounds, I'll already be in the car honking the horn to hurry up.

Why do we have a separate host for night wars? Don't tell me Scott's going to sleep through it. =P I'm actually in favor of sleeping all day and fighting all night, haha. (Just kidding, I think that would mess me up.)

I honestly have no idea what I'm doing this summer. So as of now, I should be available any of those weekends. But I would prefer to have it as early as possible so I don't melt in the middle of battle.

I'll have more to say on combat and stuff later when we get the dates squared away, but I will say that I hope we can find somewhere new and fresh for the daytime rounds. Even if it's just another part of Carderock or something.

So, it turns out I don't have anything going on for the 27th-28th, so all of those weekends are available except the first one (shameless plug: NENO June 14th, 20+ players turnout!)

So if we have it on the weekend of June 20th, I just need to plan a weeklong trip accordingly... Less drivin', more shootin'.

Looks like this is going to on the 20th and 21st of June this year, the island can only be reserved on odd days, so that means that the island day will be Sunday. In some ways this is probably better since the locals are usually more tired the second day and there is more stuff to do at the island if they don't want to fight anymore. Of course this year I am going to really push myself to make everything, I'm not about to ditch any night wars again!

Good pick. I'll be leaving some events at home behind and jumping into NENO 12 the week before. How much time I spend training with DX vs shenanigans with Scott is up to you guys.

Also, I have paintball vouchers! There are fields in NJ, PA, and one in CT that supports them, although it might be worth asking other fields as well, such as the one in NY.

Okay, so that date should work. (Bring lots of drinking water everybody!) Put me on the attendance list.

What say we start planning out rounds 'n' shizz? So here's what I want to do:
-1-2 hr 1HS at Sycamore Island, no boundaries (except maybe the treehouse or whatever).
-FFA 1HK and/or 1HS at the Labyrinth (totally should be the name of the portable maze). Don't care about time limits, as long as it's not too short. That is one of the few battlegrounds where I think a FFA would actually be awesome.

Actually I don't really have any other specific recommendations. One thing I will say is, this is the third year we've done this, so we should try to avoid doing the same stuff again. We want to keep things fresh. I would say that Sycamore Island is getting pretty close to being exhausted. We've done almost everything there. I think it's still good for one more year, we just need to be creative in our setups. The one thing I would like to try again is CTF where the flags are on each end of the island, but maybe altered a little bit. We could also do a VIP game where the VIP has to go from one end to the other. Not sure about doing naval wars again, unless someone can think of a way to keep them fresh. Maybe like a 1CTF game where the attackers start in the water, then when they get the flag, they have to go back into the water to take it somewhere, and the defenders can get into boats as well to pursue them.

Where would we be fighting at Carderock? I'm not really interested in fighting in the same place as the previous wars, but the park is huge, and I'm sure there are better places around. I'd suggest doing longer rounds where each team can bring in extra water, because unless we can find a good place to refill, I feel like there'd be too much downtime between battles. Wait, wasn't there a canal that goes through there? Also, there's a lot more to Westmoreland as well, right?

Obviously I'm the most excited for the night wars. I actually wouldn't mind not getting much fighting in during the day as long as we made up for it at night. Since we'll hopefully be spending a lot of time fighting at night, I don't really care about getting everyone up early. On Friday night we should also go adventuring.

^Near Washington DC. Actually, I ought to edit that in to Scott's post, because it might not be obvious if you've never attended it before. Though I did add it to the 2015 Community Wars sticky post, which anybody looking for an up-to-date list of all community wars (plus dates and locations) should refer to.

I am waiting for a response from one of the island people about whether the 21 is available for reserving, hopefully it is, because rescheduling at this point would be a pain. As for fighting more at night, I am OK with that, especially if it ends up being the typical hot-n-humid DC summer. I agree Westmoreland still has more potential, I feel it was mostly the teams that made it bad last time, not the battlefield. I am trying to scout other places as well because I'd rather not do Carderock again if I can help it. It is a big place, but 80% of it is unusable as a battlefield due to a combination of massive hills (only attackable from one side) and think underbrush that would require cutting to get through. I plan to scout around there a little more, but I am not very optimistic about it.
As for the island, we have talked about possibly having a naval war between the two islands (Sycamore, and the next island up). I was orrigonally worried that the upstream team would have an advantage, being that they would have more speed for invading, but I've been giving it some thought, and so long as the river is calm, it would probably wouldn't make enough of a difference.

Anyway, I plan to make a schedule for the war on Monday, I will also try and check back over the weekend, but I am going to be very busy. At minimum I will post whether we succeeded in reserving the island that weekend or not.

Sounds good. I'm 90% sure I'm going to this. My job situation is still up in the air. As you know i received a conditional job offer about a month ago. They sent me to see a psychiatrist, and that I'd hear back on whether I got the final offer by June 5th. I went in for the first test at the beginning of March mind you. It's basically a for sure, but it's taking so long that I'm getting annoyed. Nick (Belisaurius) clued me in on a City Planner job here in Clayton, so I went in and applied for that today. There is the possibility that I get hired there before even receiving a final offer from the emergency planning job, and even if I get a final offer there I won't start til mid June. The difference between the two jobs in terms of my availability is rather stark. The emergency planning job would give me a week off every month since I'd be working 12 hour shifts and would be working some weekends, but I'd only get that after completing training which would be around October, so I wouldn't be able to make Pandemonium. However, I'd only get 4 days of vacation a year aside from the week off per month. The city planning job in Clayton would be normal hours with much more vacation, probably less overall than the emergency job in Raleigh, but it would be more flexible. Either way I should probably make this because it's only a few hours away from me.

OK my dad heard back from the people at the island, sadly it is already taken that weekend! There are a few possibilities, we could reschedule the whole thing for the weekend after (which is available), we could still have it that weekend just at a different spot (pending lots of scouting this week), or everyone can come a day early or leave a day late and we could have the island war Monday or Friday (since no reservation is needed weekdays).

I still don't have a smart phone, and will be out all day, so I wont be able to get back to you until tomorrow night.

I actually have no problems with that, but I can't imagine everyone else would be able to make it. I guess we'll find out quite soon.

Yeah, there's no way I can make Mondays or Fridays. I should be working regardless and I can't take time off that early. I can make Saturday and Sunday.

I still don't know if weekdays are an option for me or not. Weekends should be no problem. I don't mind skipping Sycamore Island, since we've already done a lot with it, but only as long as you find a better spot. Good luck in your search.
